Here is the legendary Saffron – The most expensive spice reigning glory over all the spice markets across the globe.

The delicate, bright saffron – colored thread-like strands have an impeccably earthy, sweet, and floral aroma.

Each strand of the exotic, precious spice is hand-picked from the stigma of the saffron crocus flower. About 1,000 flowers produce just one ounce of saffron & each flower produces only three threads of saffron – this is why saffron is so expensive!

It is commonly grown in Iran, India, Greece, Spain, Afghanistan, and Morocco.

The love affair of Cleopatra – the epitome of beauty & saffron is known all over the world. Yes…saffron goes a long way! It is believed that Cleopatra bathed in saffron-infused milk to enhance her brilliant, youthful, healthy glow – a glow that made all the suitors swoon over her beauty in adoration!

And the magic of saffron does not end here. Alexander the Great enjoyed soaking in warm baths sprinkled with saffron as he believed it would heal his wounds after the battles.

The Buddhist monks began draping precious saffron-dyed robes in the ancient era, although today, they get dyed with turmeric as a substitute.

Saffron possesses excellent health benefits, including gastronomic and therapeutic well-being. The ancient Egyptians and Indians used saffron as an aphrodisiac. It is effective in body cleansing and sharpening the mind.

Saffron is high in antioxidants and is used to treat various ailments like asthma, cough, heartburn, insomnia, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and dull, dry skin. It is also used to elevate mood and may reduce PMS symptoms.

In the culinary world, saffron is known for its aroma, flavor, and color. Enough of talking. Let’s get making and sloshing down some delicious saffron spiked beverages this summer.

Ingredients:

  • 15 Saffron threads (or more for overzealous types)
  • Ice
  • Water

Method:

Add saffron threads to a mason jar. The quantity depends on your liking. You may lightly grind them as well.

Toss in some ice cubes.

Fill the jar with water.

Allow it to sit for 5-6 hours or overnight (better!) in the fridge to allow a good infusion of saffron in the water. The color of the water intensifies gradually into a beautiful shade of saffron.
